The OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) protocol is a universal communication standard for industrial systems, enabling secure and platform-independent data exchange between devices and applications. It ensures interoperability, scalability, and advanced security mechanisms, making it an ideal solution for Industry 4.0.
ALTEN Polska undertook a project aimed at integrating the client’s industrial systems using the standardized OPC UA communication protocol. The objective was to deliver a solution that ensures secure and efficient data exchange within a complex ecosystem of diverse systems.
ALTEN Polska’s Role
ALTEN Polska was tasked with designing and implementing software that allows an embedded computer to share system status information via the OPC UA standard. The primary goal was to ensure seamless integration, data security, and intuitive management of the information model. The project required advanced engineering expertise and adaptation to the client’s requirements and market standards.
Project Execution
The project began with the development of a C++ application that functions as an OPC UA server. The application enables monitoring of the system status through authorized client connections. To simplify deployment, the team prepared a Docker container containing the complete software package, eliminating the need for the client to manage dependencies.
Additionally, a suite of tools was developed to streamline information model management. Scripts for converting data from XLSX format to source code allowed for easy extension of the application’s functionality during maintenance. The team also established a public key infrastructure and tools for generating and testing certificates, enabling the testing of various security policies.
Outcome
ALTEN Polska delivered the solution on time, enhancing the client’s system with OPC UA communication capabilities. Thanks to containerization and supporting tools, the client can easily implement updates and integrate their system with third-party solutions.
The project concluded successfully, with the client receiving comprehensive training and documentation, enabling independent management and development of the application. Through effective collaboration and a clear understanding of the client’s needs, the solution met all expectations and industry standards.
