Project Title: Implementation of a Business Intelligence Tool in the Investment Banking Sector

Client: Global Leader in Corporate and Investment Banking

Industry: Banking, Finance & Insurance

Expertise: Business Analysis

Project Scope: Implementation and maintenance of a Business Intelligence system

Tools: Qlik Sense, Java, SQL, SQL Developer, Jira, Confluence

Business Intelligence (BI) tools for the banking sector are a cornerstone of modern data management strategies. They enable the transformation of complex data into actionable insights, supporting decision-making based on reliable analysis. Key benefits of BI include more efficient risk monitoring, personalized customer offerings, and optimized operational processes.

The goal of this project was to acquire financial data from an international information provider and integrate it into interactive dashboards in Qlik Sense. This tool was made available to the bank’s analysts to support effective data analysis and strategic decision-making.

ALTEN Polska’s Role

ALTEN Polska’s main task was to conduct a comprehensive business and system analysis covering the entire project lifecycle. The work began with in-depth consultations with members of the corporate finance department, allowing for a thorough understanding of the client’s needs and expectations. Next, detailed analysis of the required data was conducted, discussions with the external financial information provider were held, and functional requirements for the Qlik Sense development team were prepared.

A key aspect of the project was managing the implementation process, supervising task execution, and conducting comprehensive application tests to ensure high quality and compliance with client expectations. Upon completion of the implementation phase, ALTEN Polska played a crucial role in maintaining the tool. This included providing operational support, responding to system changes, and introducing improvements to adapt the tool to the client’s dynamically changing business needs.

Project Execution

The project commenced with consultations involving the bank’s team responsible for analyzing large corporate loans and structured financial products. ALTEN Polska conducted a detailed needs analysis, which included identifying required data, preferred presentation formats (e.g., tables, charts), and the expected frequency of information delivery.

The next stage involved collaboration with the financial data provider to assess methods for transferring data to the bank. The requirements analysis covered the selection of appropriate technological tools and methods for integration with the external system (API vs. SFTP). Based on the gathered information, Qlik Sense was proposed as the optimal solution, meeting all client requirements.

Detailed requirements were documented as user stories in Jira and handed over to the development team. Simultaneously, ALTEN Polska developed a secure method for accessing the final product in compliance with the bank’s data security policies. During the development phase, the team addressed ongoing issues, particularly those related to data integration.

Upon completing development work, joint testing of the tool was conducted with end-user participation. After successful testing, the product was implemented and made available to its final users.

Final Outcome

The project resulted in advanced management dashboards in Qlik Sense, tailored to individual user needs. Bank analysts gained an intuitive way to analyze selected financial data, presented in tables and charts.

The implementation significantly enhanced the client’s analytical capabilities and contributed to time savings measured in thousands of hours annually. Automating data acquisition processes allowed analysts to focus on higher-value tasks, such as preparing financial strategies or risk analysis.

Summary

With the implementation of the Qlik Sense system, the client gained an advanced Business Intelligence tool that streamlined financial data analysis and improved decision-making processes. Automation of key tasks brought time savings, enabling the client’s team to focus on more strategic aspects of their operations. The project exemplifies the effective use of BI technology in the investment banking sector, delivering tangible business benefits.
