Certification of a New Turboprop Engine

Project Title: Certification of a New Turboprop Engine – A Key Step in Compliance with
EASA and FAA Standards

Client: Global leader in aircraft engine manufacturing for the civil and military sectors

Industry: Aeronautics

Expertise: Quality | Mechanics & Materials

Scope of the Project: Design and certification of turboprop engines

Tools: NX, ANSYS, Python, APDL

The certification of a new turboprop engine is a critical process that ensures compliance with international safety and performance standards, such as those set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency).

This process involves a comprehensive technical assessment, including the analysis of performance, safety, and environmental impact. Before an engine is introduced into service, its certification guarantees that it meets all regulatory requirements for safety and performance across various flight conditions.

Turboprop engines are widely used in short- and medium-range aircraft, offering excellent efficiency at low speeds. The project was resumed in 2020 after a pandemic-related hiatus, with ALTEN Poland engineers engaged in preparing the engine for certification in compliance with aviation standards.

Project Execution

At the outset, the ALTEN Polska engineering team focused on analyzing components for potential material defects, which are crucial for ensuring safety. MRBE (Material Review Board Engineering) specialists conducted a thorough analysis of engine parts, incorporating both destructive testing and computer simulations. The project was then expanded to include a team of Finite Element Method (FEM) specialists who developed detailed models to evaluate the wear and durability of individual components.

Final Outcome

The project utilized advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing and innovative materials, requiring sophisticated analysis. Based on the models developed by ALTEN Polska engineers, a certification report was produced, outlining key parameters, such as the number of flight hours between services and the projected degradation of engine components.

Summary

The client recognized the quality and professionalism of the ALTEN Poland team in the certification of modern aircraft engines, which led to continued collaboration on a subsequent project, involving certification for the military sector.
