Creating embedded software for an insulin pump involves designing and implementing a control system for a medical device that precisely administers insulin based on the patient’s health parameters. This system must be reliable, comply with strict safety standards, and ensure flawless operation in daily use.

ALTEN Polska supported the client in developing a new version of an insulin pump—a life-saving device that accurately doses insulin for diabetes patients. The key objective was to ensure reliability and safety in accordance with the requirements of the IEC 62304 standard.

The project focused on building a safety-critical embedded system, essential for medical products. The client sought a partner with expertise in embedded software design and compliance with the highest safety standards.

Task of the ALTEN Polska Team

The ALTEN Polska team was tasked with creating a complete embedded software solution that met the rigorous requirements of Class C safety. The client prioritized product reliability and adherence to the highest safety standards. The work included both software development and conceptual tasks, such as designing solutions and selecting optimization tools.

Project Execution

The project was carried out between 2018 and 2019. An expert from ALTEN Polska, specializing in safety-critical software, joined the team. The key stages included:

  • Designing and implementing code in C and C++ for STM32 microcontrollers,
  • Developing solutions compliant with the IEC 62304 standard,
  • Close collaboration with the client’s team to ensure efficient system integration.

The work was based on methodologies tailored to MedTech industry standards, ensuring high-quality software delivery.

Final Outcome

The result of the project was software compliant with Class C safety, the highest level defined by the IEC 62304 standard. The delivered system enabled precise and reliable operation of the insulin pump, enhancing safety for end users.
